How is it (City of Sand - reprise)
How is it
We know each other
In every place
but here
In every time
but now?

Forced to confront the present
we are strangers
who loved each other
only a moment ago
or later tonight

We exist
in another city
A City of Sand
in which every grain is a machine
that comprehends us
and translates us
into Itself

Leaving - impossible
Staying - impossible
We seep
out of each other
out of the present
into what we were
what we could be

The Right Spell (or The Curse of A Hundred Miles)
Once upon a time
A man was cursed
That his heart should burst
If he walked beyond a hundred miles
And as he walked the next hundred
It should grow again within him
Only lasting another hundred
Before it failed again
Thus was distance made into agony
As he travelled in search of the right spell
To break this curse
One day he drew a circle about him
One hundred miles in diameter
Within which he could walk, live, grow old
And die
It seemed to work
He had defeated the curse
By his head and not his heart
He rejoiced but not without bitterness
For he never knew
All the long days of his life
If it had been the
Right spell

very far down the rabbit hole
down down down
far away the distant notion
down down down
far away the golden ocean

  The City of Sand
For Is.

In a city of sand
We will dream so deeply
Of water
That even though the body is parched
Until the mind forgets thirst
We will invent new words for moisture
And place them between the particles of dust
That the dream is verdant
Even though the air is dessicate
And we will seep
Supple into the ground
Uncontained
Unconsumed
By the city of sand

  The Path of Least Resistance
The pavement was made for walking
The city spied on every step
The corner of your eye watching
We strolled into the trap.
It was the path of least resistance
Then.

The sea was made for crossing
The end of winter was a sign
The corner of your eye melting
Dissolving into mine.
It was the path of least resistance
Then.

The land was made for returning
Open handed to dreaming exiles
The corner of your eye fading
Turned elsewhere along the miles
It was the path of least resistance
Then.

Now
Bereft of your looking,
I've lost the path of least resistance.
The city, sea and land are always spinning,
holding themselves at a distance.
The corner of your eye is nowhere,
and I hunger in persistence
to be in sight,
to be in colour,
Tired of the white of new beginnings.
To be known as your eye knows me,
At the center of your iris.
You let me in with the light onto
The path of least resistance
That in the end,
led away from you.

  Bang Bang
Slip this pass your tongue
Unknown to anyone
Inside you know it will never
Come to this
It is only a word sounding
Deep in the mind
Ending in sleep and another day.

  Sail Sale
I hide the name
for a languid state
but some winds blow
as if they know
what we say
in the dead of night
as I lay you
out of sight
beside me

I build a tale
inside a well
that grows so pale
for lack of light
and it turns and it turns
into a moon
as I lay it out
in the dead of night
beside me

The wind wants a sail
built from a tale
and I sell a secret
that I cannot tell

  Legless
I know a man
Who keeps a cage
He's the pike of the lake
And doesn't age
I know a man
Who keeps his teeth
He's a shark in a cave
And doesn't leave
I know a man
Who waits his while
And he waits and he waits
With a smile
Now it doesn't do to worry
Because you know
When you're hungry
You'll go get some meat
And when you're legless
You'll just walk on borrowed feet
Now it wouldn't hurt to hurry
Because you know
When he's hungry
He'll come get some meat
And when he's legless
You should worry about your feet

  Unfinished
Fear to tread in places
That have no words
No name for the spaces
Or lines on the world
Landing in a plain chart
Making a mark with my hand
And no wonder that the heart
Is a wasteland
A twirling pen
Spins you and me
A poor meagre pen
And so much sea

  Deux Ex Machina
A house by the lakeside
At the end of a bus ride
Winding through twilight
Your eyes in my hand

A hole in the sky
At the height of winter
You fell through it to lie
With your heart in my hand

A kick through the door
And overboard in an instant
I took it too far with
My home in your hand

I have no notion
No notion of people
Dying to be further away
Then killing themselves
in order to stay
Exactly
where
they
are.

Things You'll Do Just Because You're Bored
Strike up a dictionary
Blank out all the words of pain
Find out all the spaces
In between the rain
Start out racing
With an unsuitable man
Go home broken
Just because you can
Take up smoking
Again for the third time
And quit again forever
When you're feeling fine
Never lasting longer
Than the word forever
Leaving your mouth
And the way it lingers
Learn a world map
All the seas between
Dream up the unknown
Though its all been seen
Then throw away the keys
And take the longest way
Drink away the night
And sleep away the day
Court the highest payer
Then spit on their reward
All these things you'll do
Just because you're bored.

Dedicated to E.H.

  Happenchance
A long dot
A short circle
On the floor
then in the sky
This is how you happen
Happen to chance
upon it

Every time
Every single time
I circle
Nothing ever happens
And this is how you happen
Happen to chance
upon me

Every corner
And every sea
I've gone just to leave
A circle
Hoping that you'll happen
Happen to chance
upon

You take a long time
You take such a long time

  Galapagos
line up the sails
foul up the clews
bring her down
her knees will hold
all for the sight of galapagos
haul in the ropes
no blows in sight
a smooth roll under
the sheetbends hold
all for the sight of galapagos
captain sir you know the way
line by line the stars arrange
clouded over by the watch
though the light should hold
all for the sight of galapagos
missing winds
traded tales
shore-bound
taking tea and having scones
leaves don't mean a thing to me
compass safe
weight thrown off
waiting now
and the dream will hold
all for the sight of galapagos
